Life of Pi Lost Chapter

Lost Chapter between Chapter 89 & 90.

I looked up into the sky and asked “why? Why me?” had these events been placed upon me for a reason, or was it just my luck. I had lost track of the days as time went on, survival became my only option. Richard Parker hadn’t been himself either, lacking food and sleep can drive anyone crazy. I dozed off for 20 minutes and was awaken by the sound of the boat rocking as if we’ve just been hit by something. I looked out over the boat to see nothing but the cool, still, blue water of the ocean. I looked over to Richard Parker and he seemed startled as if he saw something. Further on out, about 100 meters away was a fin sticking out of the water. I had also seen what looked to be  an island no more than a 15 minute swim away.  I thought my mind was just playing games with me from the blazing sun, but no. A shark what seemed to be about 30 meters long was swimming this way. I sat back and was glued to Richard Parker as my energy allowed me no reaction. As it got closer my legs and arms continued to shake more and more making Richard Parker wonder if everything was okay. The shark struck the boat again this time almost flipping the entire thing over. I remained close to Richard Parker holding onto him for dear life. I told him “everything is going to be alright,” trying to make myself feel better. The shark this time used all its energy and BANG! the shark hit the side causing the boat to flip in mid air. The water was dented then regained form as us and the boat hit the water. “Help! Help!” I yelled, thinking that would save me from this deadly situation. I saw no shark and no Richard Parker as i scanned the disturbed water and debris of the boat. I dove under hoping I would find Richard Parker and to my surprise there he was, trying to stay up above the water. I swam over to him trying to hold back the fear that the shark was still near. I grabbed Richard Parker and said “I got you,” in a soft confident tone. He didn’t have the lone strength to swim by himself so I fixed him onto my back and swam in the direction of the island we saw earlier. Using everything I had, getting weaker and weaker every motion. we didn’t look back but the one time I did the shark seemed to be gone but we couldn’t bank on it. Both of us were running out of energy, and fast! I repeated to myself “Survive, survive, survive” I learned as a child your body is weaker than your mind. I kept swimming, screaming in pain and choking on the salt water I had swallowed. We made it, both me and Richard Parker laid exhausted on the island shore breathing heavily, my heart beating out of my chest. I glanced over with the little energy I had to see if Richard was okay, he was as I sighed in relief. Another hour passed as weed on the ocean shore not thinking about anything but trying to rest. We both rose up and were curious as to where we were. The island was beautiful with white sand surrounding a rich green forest. Richard Parker ran off, I decided to leave him, the island wasn’t that big. I explored myself searching for some type of food or anything to fill my empty stomach. I came across a tree with orange berries hanging from above. I grabbed a nearby tree branch and shook off a couple which fell to the moist ground. I picked them up and examined them very carefully to make sure they weren’t poisonous. I remembered when I was 6 years old back at my dad’s zoo he told me that orange and blue berries were safe to eat while red and white were not. He told me this because they had many of these berry trees in the animal cages and the red and white ones were never touched. So Without thinking any further I shoved the handful of berries down my throat savouring every bite of the sweet tasty fruit. But, as soon as I swallowed them I heard a voice… “Hello! who are you?” I pinched myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming before I shot around and looked in the direction of the oncoming voice. I was surprised to see someone wearing tarred clothing only covering the bottom of his dirty body. I froze in my footsteps and answered in a very soft tone “My name, my names Pi” He started to walk closer as I was getting ready to run away. The man stopped and said “wait!” so I did, we were now standing face to face. He introduced himself and said “My name is Koopa, I’m the leader of our tribe. We are called the Gwatties”. I was lost in both words and expression. He explained further “We have lived on this island for over 20 years, ever since we survived when our boat sank in the 1950’s. We have managed to survive and live off the island collecting resources and sharing supplies. There are four of us here, two girls and two boys, not including me”. I was shocked and managed to say “I swam here after we got attacked by a shark who wrecked our boat”. He immediately questioned, “We?” I then replied stupidly without hesitating “my tiger” he didn’t seem to believe me because of the odd nature of the friendship, man and beast. After he was done laughing He then offered to take me back to meet the others as well as their home but I politely refused because I needed to find Richard Parker first. I left Koopa and vanished deeper into the forest, I then started screaming “Richard! where are you?” hoping he would hear and run to the sound of the voice. No answer… After hours of searching I came upon what seemed to be the home of the Gwatties. I noticed they had food and I was tired of eating the berries so I quickly split open a coconut they had lying around and drank every last sip of it, finished off with a loud burp. I also needed to rest as I was just about to fall over from all the walking and yelling I had done earlier. Once I entered the home I immediately knew something was wrong. It was as if silence was never so hard to come by. As i looked through the empty house I caught a glimpse of the back to see Richard Parker locked in a cage. My mind started going, part of me was confused and the other part of me was scared not knowing what to do. I leaped through the rest of the house to the back where Richard was caged up. I wasn’t able to find the key but within a few seconds I heard a voice. “You weren’t joking,” Koopa said firmly, right behind me with the other members of the Gwatties. I lost it and screamed “what is this?”  I noticed one of the members behind him was badly injured and had stripped leaves covering his arm, I assumed Richard Parker had done that to him. In a vague tone he then said “We want to make you an offer, we will build a boat for you in return for your tiger, what do you think? do you accept?” I was in total disbelief that anything could be worse than the shark attack but I was wrong. I looked over at Richard Parker and just stared at him and to my luck, the shine of the key to the cage blinded me but I refused to pick it up now so I gently kicked it into RP’s cage without anyone noticing.. I said back to Koopa after minutes of thinking “Yes, I accept”. Immediately after Koopa and the Gwatties started on the boat. I stood by Richard Parker telling him I would try and get him out but the thought of leaving without him drove me insane. As I was going through the house I noticed a huge amount of weapons lying around everywhere, from handguns, spears and knives. I wondered how they managed to posses all of them. Part of me guessed I wasn’t the only one who’s washed up upon this island. Days passed and the boat was close to being finished in which I would be forced to leave the island without Richard Parker. Every Night thoughts consumed my mind of getting away with Richard Parker, most were shot down at the fact there was five of them and only one of me. The last morning came and I was awoken by a light rainfall over the island. I was then greeted by Koopa who had this fake smile on him, one  as if he had just cut in line at the zoo and got away with it. He then led me to the boat and I stopped in amazement “wow” I said with my jaw almost hitting the floor. The boat was constructed perfectly with the use of bamboo as the base and thick leaves and tree branches to provide protection over top. They had brought Richard Parker and his cage by so I was able to say good bye. As I walked up to the cage without hesitation I grabbed the key from inside and unlocked it releasing Richard Parker. He leaped out and was immediately in attack mode as he took out two of the Gwatties with vicious strikes to the face. I couldn’t let Richard Parker have all the fun so I went after the other two as Koopa ran back to the house to savage any weapons he could find. The other four Gwatties had been killed and we had one more to go. I walked along in the direction of Koopa’s house with Richard Parker right by my side. When we reached the house, we realized he wasn’t in there and before we could turn around we heard the sounds of knives being hit together. Richard Parker roared in anger and sprinted toward Koopa. His weapons were useless against Richard Parker who tackled him to the ground biting his entire hand off leaving him in a puddle of blood. I then delivered the life ending blow with a stab right to the head. After the carnage we then gathered any supplies we could find left from the house and headed toward our brand new boat. We were both feeling invincible as I looked up and pointed in the sky “Thank you,” I said to myself. We were unable to stay on the island because the Gwatties had used up everything and we would die trying to live on it. So we boarded the new boat, we salvaged any remaining supplies which was a couple bottles of water, canned soup, flashlight and some towels. It was time to leave, we started pushing the boat deeper and deeper into the calm blue sea as both I and Richard Parker hopped on. It was like we hit the lottery that day but as time went on our supplies started to diminish and we were in the same situation as before but this time, no island in sight.

Animals Like Pie

Journal entry #1 Life Of Pi

The information I received from the beginning of the novel to now is crazy! The thing that surprised me the most are the distances in which you can be from an animal for it to pose as a flight risk. This occurs when an animal is unsafe and feels the need to run away or leave an area. In regards to how the treatment of animals is, I think the zoos in general could do a much better job at making the animals feel at home.

This video will leave you sick to your stomach if you have ANY feelings towards animals. This is the Erbil Zoo located in the capital of the Kurdistan region. This video shows these animals confined in cages, left with garbage for food and absolutely no room to move driving them insane.

The reactions I have toward this are a feeling of disgust because they treat the animals so poorly. I was able to relate to them and feel a sense of disappointment on behalf of civilization, this is just unacceptable. How would you feel if you were taken from your home and put in a confined area or even worse, a cage. I think Pi goes into depth talking about animals behavior because it is similar to those of humans, as well as religion which is another topic Pi is intrigued by. But, specifically towards humans, animals tend to react the same way we do which is a very interesting fact. Animal behavior is very much related to human behavior in the sense that we feel different when placed in a new situation. That much like an animal when moved from the vast and beautiful jungle to a confined cage and plastic trees. One piece of wisdom that comes to mind when reading this is

“Until one has loved an animal a part of one’s soul remains awakened”

The incredible bond between man and beast
The incredible bond between man and beast

This piece of wisdom speaks volumes as to what animals can do for us when loved and cared for. We as humans are the most dangerous animals on this planet, not them. They deserve to live in peace because they do no harm to us unless we are the first to act. In his knowledge and concern for animals, Pi seems to be a very loving, caring and loyal man. My attitudes towards animals in this world are very open because they are all beautiful creatures. My opinion is that they aren’t meant to be locked up in cages and used as sources as entertainment for us humans. They deserve much more than they receive and time and time again we treat them in the worst ways. For example, many animal species such as West African Black Rhinoceroses who are now extinct due to US taking them away from their homes and killing them for financial gain or sticking them in zoos to eventually die. My concerns for the future are that there won’t be any animals left due to our constant need for them. Whether it be as pet’s in our homes, in zoos for entertainment, or dead for fur and food. The future for animals is in our hands and it’s time to make a change and this time, not for us.

So Far Gone

Macbeth Journal entry #3

The new information we have discovered about the Macbeth’s are that they have successfully killed King Duncan. In terms of the main character Macbeth, my feelings toward him have changed drastically. He went from being the nice guy who everybody liked to murdering the king in cold blood. I would describe Macbeth as very easily influenced by others and caring a lot about what others think of him. I feel with the perception that people have of him, he will not be accused of the murders and get away as the new king. On the other hand, Lady Macbeth in my opinion is very ambitious and has one goal, and won’t let anybody get in the way of it. Something that has stayed consistent is her ambition and her nature has now come to life after convincing Macbeth to kill  Duncan.

Lady Macbeth and Macbeth in Roman Polanski's rendition of the play
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in Roman Polanski’s movie rendition of the play “Macbeth”

As the future for Macbeth and the country of Scotland unfolds I have a variety of predictions. First, I see Macbeth not being able to stop his desire to kill now that he has been brainwashed by his wife, Lady Macbeth. Also, with Macbeth’s new found determination I see himself getting into a situation that may have no way out. With that said, I predict that the Macduff will be able to see through Macbeth’s fake identity and stop the new formed Tyrant from running Scotland into the ground. In regards to Lady Macbeth, I predict she will go on as if the murders never happened because of the little remorse she has showed. Finally, I predict that the guilt of Duncan’s death will not affect Macbeth or Lady Macbeth because of how ambitious the pair have gotten together. But, will the witches prophecy for Macbeth come true or will it just drive him insane?

Macbeth Brought to Life

Macbeth Journal entry #5

After watching Polanski’s rendition of “Macbeth” I was able to view the play from a visual perspective which I enjoyed a lot! The overall atmosphere portrayed in the movie is very dark and gloomy. In my opinion, it isn’t very effective because if you think back to when this play was performed, it would have been performed during the day. This would allow the audience to be surprised when all the killing occurs throughout the play. I would  rather be surprised than already be able to assume because of the dark nature seen in the movie. However, the lights used in the play creates a very dramatic and intriguing vibe. They are used very effectively to portray the different moods experienced throughout the play. For example, in the scene Macbeth tries to grab the floating dagger, the light used allows you to almost feel what it was like to not grab it. (Excuse the subtitles)

One of the best executed pieces of the movie was the music, which allowed me to connect very well to the actions. The best scene represented was that in which Macbeth is sitting on top of Duncan with the dagger in his hands and when Duncan awakes, he is greeted to multiple stabs from Macbeth which led to his death.

Something I’ve noticed throughout the many movies and TV series I’ve watched are that the music plays a key role! In this film, it is used very carefully to assure you can feel what the character is feeling through the different types and volumes of  music heard. Another strength in the movie was definitely the clothing, I couldn’t find anything they could have changed, not one thing! If we were to go back to the 15th century, that is exactly how they would have dressed, period.

Actor
Actor “Jon Finch” who plays Macbeth in Roman Polanski’s film

Aside from the visuals and audio, there’s the actual acting piece which I thought was good, but nothing special. The actors in the movie do play their part appropriately but it seems like they’re playing it safe. I don’t feel like the actors took risks to achieve the standards of the play set by Shakespeare. The one flaw that stood out to me were the killing and fighting scenes, they just didn’t seem realistic. But, something that could have made or broken the play was in regards to the lines and what was said and what was taken out. From what I saw and heard, Polanski edited the lines to a T, meaning they were perfect and flowed very nicely with the action in the movie. In regards to the pacing, I thought some of the scenes happened way too slow! the main one being the death of Macbeth and how long the fight between him and Macduff took before his tragic death which gave Scotland as a country, new life and a new leader. To conclude, in overall examination of Polanski’s big picture I would say he did an excellent job at capturing the tragedy of Macbeth and if I were being picky I would suggest some minor changes, one being the acting of Lady Macbeth and also making the play have a brighter setting to avoid giving away the end result. But, all and all, a great film by Roman Polanski.

The Perfect Porter

Macbeth Journal entry #4

In Polanski’s version of Macbeth, the Porter scene is very similar to that in the book. I find Shakespeare creates a very dark and scary setting when the Porter recites his soliloquy. But, in  Polanski’s movie I don’t get the same feeling. I think this mainly because this movie was created a long time ago and they obviously didn’t have the technology we have now to create a stronger message through props, and special effects. Although, the way Polanski executed the scene was excellent and was very easy to understand. In contrast to the movie and the book, I noticed Polanski had the Porter skip every few lines which wasn’t very noticeable unless examined thoroughly because of how well it flowed. However, in my opinion, the best version of the Porter scene is shown through the 2010 rendition of Macbeth . It is a spot on representation of the play written by Shakespeare. In comparison to Polanski’s, the lighting plays a KEY factor in achieving the right mood for the audience. This is seen in Macbeth’s 2010 re-make when the Porter becomes lost in the darkness at times and shows up from the flashes of lighting. If you skip to 1:08 in the video below you can see the positive effects the lighting plays.

Along with the lighting, the 2010 Macbeth rendition is directed to perfection with the execution of setting, props and wardrobe. First, the setting seems to take place in down town Detroit or New York. This creates a very sketchy and dark vibe to the audience. If Shakespeare were to create a modern day version of this scene the setting would be just that! Secondly, the props implemented in the scene, as well as the Porter allow the viewers to easily detect what is happening. the strongest prop I found was the bottle of alcohol and by seeing it in the Porter’s hand you could tell he had a little too much to drink. Last but not least, the wardrobe which was very simple but portrayed a strong message. The porter was dressed in a wife beater and what seemed to be lounge pants (pajamas or track pants). Just from seeing  the bottle in his hand and the way he was dressed, you could tell he wasn’t somebody you wanted to run into. To conclude,  All of those aspects put together create and best represent the atmosphere and mood of the play Macbeth written back in the 15th century.

Different Views of What we Once Knew

Macbeth Journal entry #1

1.) King Duncan – A very noble and trustworthy man. He sees Macbeth as a hero and crowns him Thane of Cawdor after the Rebel Thane was executed. In (I.v.14) King Duncan greets Macbeth as “Worthiest cousin”. This reveals he thinks of Macbeth as family, or blood related.

I disagree with the description because Duncan will soon find out Macbeth isn’t the man he reveals himself to be. I also disagree because Duncan is king, many people would love to be king. For example, Macbeth may be motivated to become King after receiving higher status because nobody would suspect him as the murderer.

2.) Other Thanes – They see him as the new kid in school. For example, Macbeth is new to the title given to him therefore they see Macbeth as very unacknowledged. This also has to do with the fact they don’t really know him. In (I.iii.135-136) the Thanes notice Macbeth’s distraught state but Banquo saves the day and tells them it is just Macbeth’s unfamiliarity with the title.

I agree with the Thanes opinion because they aren’t all just greeting Macbeth and becoming best friends right away like King Duncan. They are analyzing him and trying to figure out what kind of person he is. This is a proper approach to meeting new people because in the end, you may just get stabbed in the back.

3.) Lady Macbeth – She sees Macbeth as very weak and unwilling because of his soft nature. This is seen when she brings up her wish, which is for Macbeth to kill her husband, King Duncan. In (I.iv.17-18) Lady Macbeth says “It is too full O’ Th’ milk of human kindness to catch the nearest way.” This refers to Macbeth in which she thinks he is too weak to grab the Scottish crown. Therefore, the nearest way is to murder King Duncan.

I disagree with Lady Macbeth’s opinion because it is a lot easier to call someone else soft when you aren’t the one doing it. Macbeth has just been named Thane of Cawdor and now the Kings wife is planning for him to already to kill her husband. That’s a lot to take in if you’re him and I don’t think her judgement is fair.

4.) Macbeth – He is very humble at the beginning of the play and understands his role among the people. But as soon as he gets the prophecy from the three witches his mind is drowned in constant thought and confusion. Then, once Lady Macbeth speaks with him of her plans for him to murder her husband. That is when Macbeth starts to think about the situation and says to himself in (I.vii. 1-2) “If it were done when ’tis done, then ’twere well / It were done quickly”. He is saying that if everything could be over with as soon as Duncan is killed, then it would be best for Macbeth to kill him quickly.

I agree with this description because it is very accurate. After Macbeth gets the prophecy for his future from the witches he immediately changes, and not for the better. After the first prediction comes true he is now a strong believer that he will become king. But will he have the power to do what it takes to get the title…

5.) Nick Ciaglia – My own impressions of Macbeth are that he is a very good man and he knows his role among society and is happy with it. The only flaw he possesses is that he is very easily influenced , this could change everything in the story when the witches give him the prophecy of things to come.

Act 1, Scene 7 Soliloquies

This soliloquy adds to my understanding of Macbeth in a variety of ways. First, It seems as though Macbeth is starting to fathom the idea of killing Duncan. This is proven through line 7 where he says “We’d jump the life to come.” This means he would risk the chance of any life after death to kill Duncan. He also gets mad at King Duncan in line 17 “Hath borne his faculties so meek” This refers to Duncan as using his royal powers so modestly. This doesn’t alter my opinion on Macbeth because he is now starting to think more and more about killing Duncan. This is because of the ambition Lady Macbeth possess’ and the fact his reign as king was predicted by the three witches. This doesn’t surprise me because of how easily turned Macbeth is as a character. He states in line 4-5 “That but this blow might be the be-all and the end-all…” This line broken down means all that is needed to end everything. By killing King Duncan, complete chaos will arise and cause the death of many in the future on Macbeth’s quest to be King.

Lady Ambition

Macbeth Journal entry #2

My observations of Lady Macbeth are that she is very ambitious and manipulative. She has now told Macbeth of her plans for him to kill her husband. Macbeth is unsure of this idea and he thinks it will cause chaos among the people. Instead of giving up her plans and asking someone else, she tries to manipulate Macbeth by calling him soft and a variety of other words degrading his manhood.  By the end of Act 1 the words and the future of Macbeth being King start to persuade him to carry out the task. Although, i am curious as to whether she will regret killing her husband if the deed is ever fulfilled. Will she feel a sense of guilt if she is able to convince Macbeth to do it? Once she found out it was prophecy that Macbeth was to be King, she became more ambitious and knew she could use that to her advantage. If Macbeth were to ever kill Duncan I believe it would send the city in an internal war among the people. I also think Lady Macbeth would feel very guilty because of the part she played in her husbands death. Will she take her own life because of her mistakes? I Think she will, mainly because Scotland will never be the same if Duncan is murdered by Macbeth.

A Social Drug

Social Media prohibited
Social Media banned [1]
Social media has become an addiction, Facebook  YouTube and Twitter. Talking for hours with someone who’s not with you. being able to speak your mind without saying a word and living behind a screen where the grass isn’t always green. In my opinion, this media we call social is anything but. It is consuming our lives; we are being controlled by this invention. Where you can talk back and forth with the click of a mention. We have become addicted to this technology and what it allows. the way we interact and communicate without speaking out loud.

This social media hype began in 2004 with the creation of Facebook, then YouTube in 2005 and lastly, Twitter in ’06. I believe social media is doing more harm than good to this society and for a variety of reasons. This in which everybody seems to be trapped in a maze, people blinded by this social haze.

Now, you may disagree with my opinion and I can understand why. Being able to talk to friends who live far away, keeping up with family, or just because it’s simply convenient. For example, if you haven’t seen a relative in a long time all you have to do is send them a message and BOOM! you’re in instant contact. Yes, there are good things about social media ” The pluses include easier contacts with friends, and increased chances to make new friends and create a community, as well as find romantic relationships. Even the advertising may be a plus, because it is targeted to the particular interests of the user.” [2]  This quote provides example of how social media can impact your life in a positive way. In my opinion, there are many more cons than pros to this social addiction. For example, Over the years you see less kids playing outside, and for this we need to realize. Realize that There’s a world beyond the doors of our house, being a kid use to mean scraped knees and climbing trees.  kids and teens are inside nowadays, spending hours talking to their friends online. As teenagers, this generation has become addicted to this view, that your self worth is determined by how many likes you get on a post. This feeling is unique and most of us have been diagnosed. This thing that is supposed to be used by people has turned us into its slave. Living in your room and not coming out for days. I believe  “The more social media we have, the more we think we’re connecting, yet we are really disconnecting from each other.” [3]  The author says with social media we think were talking face to face but its really pushing us farther apart. Having the ability to say things you’d never say in person, that’s a true fact. Instead we are separating from one another and it makes it harder to relate. Half of these people aren’t who they say to be, meeting the perfect guy online… must be fate.

Now don’t get me wrong, this argument has two completely different perspectives. The main message is don’t get caught on the net, as when the end comes, nothings worse than regret. But I believe the cons outweigh the pros by a huge margin, showing the damage social media can do. One of the deepest thoughts being that we Always have our heads down and might miss what’s ahead. The conversation always starts with “he or she said.”

[4]

When you watch this video you realize you can miss a lifetime of happiness from being trapped on social media. The message is to “Look Up” and make connections with real people and not to try and live life through technology.
